At Bonfire Healing, we are aware that EMDR is only a powerful treatment when used with proper training and that EMDR, like most therapy, can have the risk of further traumatization. We understand that traumatic events are too much, too fast, without an empathetic witness; so healing has to be paced for safety and regulated within our window of distress tolerance with the presence of an empathetic witness. The preparation stages of EMDR therapy can take time, and that is ok, it is the most important part of this work.

Eye Movement Desensitization

            and Reprocessing

                      (EMDR)

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based psychotherapy designed to help the brain's natural healing process to resolve traumatic or distressing memories. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses on changing how a memory is stored in the brain rather than discussing it in detail.

How EMDR Works

Traumatic experiences can overwhelm the brain’s ability to process information, causing the memory to become "frozen" or stuck in its raw, emotional form. EMDR uses Bilateral Stimulation (BLS)—such as guided eye movements, hand-tapping, or auditory tones—to re-activate the brain's natural processing system. This helps "unfreeze" the memory, allowing it to be integrated into the brain's normal memory network so it no longer triggers intense emotional or physical distress.

EMDR is a highly structured, eight-phase treatment approach designed to ensure client stability during and after each session.

EMDR is a Tier-1 recommended treatment by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Research indicates its high efficacy in treating:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex PTSD

  • Acute Stress Disorder

  • Anxiety Disorders and Panic Attacks

  • Performance Anxiety and Phobias/Fears

  • Complicated Grief and Depression

  • Dissociative Symptoms

  • Eating disorders and Addiction issues
